On the 17th of November, 2022, the Science and Technology Enterprise Appraisal Council under the Hanoi Department of Science and Technology in the field of Fisheries agreed to issue certificates for Nano Milk Thistle and Nano Yucca – Supplemental food products to support shrimp diseases prevention are two science and technology enterprise products. This is the 8th assessment council for science and technology enterprise for OIC New.

I. The process of learning, researching, and applying scientific and technological results in the field of Fisheries

The shrimp farming industry in Asia and Latin America in the past few years has suffered extremely serious economic losses due to the increasing number of diseases in farmed shrimps. The most notoriously known disesase are white feces syndrome (WFS – White Feces Syndrome) and acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (EMS/AHPND).

The disease is identified as belonging to the Vibrio bacteria group: Vibrio vulnificus (80%), Vibrio fluvialis (44%), Vibrio parahaemolyticus (28%), Vibrio alginolyticus (20%), Vibrio damselae (18%), Vibrioimius (8%) and Vibrio cholera (6%) (Dr.Chalor Limsuwan). In addition, species are also identified as blue-green algae, dinoflagellates that grow excessively, use precious substances, and eat formulas contaminated with pearl fungus. The above pathogens combined with high water temperature and high density slowly growing, etc. which cause the disease.

To prevent this disease, it is necessary to prepare a clean pond from the beginning, do not use moldy food, and limit the use of fresh food. During the farming process, strictly managing environmental factors, periodically using biological products to clean the environment, and periodically changing water will help limit diseases in shrimp, especially in times of heat and heavy, long rain.

Enhance digestive probiotics, help shrimp absorb food better, supplement vitamins and minerals to help shrimp improve their health and reduce stress. On the market today, there are drugs available to prevent and treat white feces and hepatopancreatic diseases in shrimp. These drugs are antibiotics, so when used, it is necessary to follow the prescribed dosage. Avoid using hastily, increasing the dose or not using enough, causing drug resistance, leading to prolonged treatment time, which is both expensive and ineffective.

The application of nanotechnology in water environmental treatment and disease prevention for aquaculture has helped reduce the use of antibiotics and other toxic treatment substances, helping to save costs, reduce costs, and increase quality productivity.

II. Supplemental Food Products for Aquaculture: Nano Milk Thistle and Nano Yucca – A new breakthrough in supporting disease prevention treatment for Shrimp

Active ingredients from natural medicinal herbs

Curcumin is essentially a yellow polyphenol extracted from Turmeric with very high antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral properties.

Silymarin is a flavonoid that can neutralize harmful free radicals, extracted from milk thistle, helping to stabilize liver cell membranes and prevent outside toxins from infecting liver cells.

However, Curcumin and Silymarin have the disadvantage of low bioavailability due to the low solubility of Curcumin and Silymarin in water. Therefore, in the world there are many research projects to improve the bioavailability of Curcumin and Silymarin by reducing the particle size to nano size and coating with a stabilizer to keep the particles from breaking, or forming small sized phytosome and liposome particles to increase solubility and absorption through the shrimp’s digestive system.

From the compiled documents, it can be seen that there are many processes to convert Curcumin and Silymarin into nanoparticles to increase solubility and absorption through the digestive tract. However, the synthesized Nano Curcumin and Silymarin particles are still quite large in size. With this size, the ability to transport and distribute in the digestive system will be limited. Therefore, OIC NEW has researched a process for preparing a microemulsion system with particles smaller than 50 nm in size, uniform, with better solubility than water and still retains the structure and activity of Curcumin and Silymarin in the nanoization process.

Nhat Hai Company has invested in research, modern machinery and equipment with the aim of creating Nano Curcumin and Silymarin products with high solubility, improved cell membrane permeability, stable activity and high microemulsion durability.

From Patent No. 16095 and GPHI Patent No. 2489, OIC NEW has developed into two commercialized products which has been sold on the market today.

Nano Milk Thistle main ingredients are Curcumin (turmeric) and Silymarin (milk thistle).
